What COVID-19 protocols will be in place for the in-person event?
  • Reducing the field size to a maximum capacity of 2,000 participants which will include no more than 1,225 5k participants and 775 Half Marathon participants.
  • Cancelling the 10k race due to COVID-19 safety precautions in 2021. All current 10k registrants will be notified about their registration options.
  • Packet pick up will be available Saturday, April 17 in the Knapp Center to those who are registered for the in-person event; a mask requirement and social distancing protocol will be in effect. There will not be vendors or a speaker series. Registrants who remain virtual will be shipped their race packet and will not be able to pick it up in person. More information regarding packet pick up scheduling and protocols will be announced at a later date.
  • Staggered start times will be implemented while also limiting the number of athletes per wave in order to safely start all runners and limit crowd size at the start line.
  • Face coverings will be required to be worn by all participants when not racing, including pre-race staging and upon crossing the finish line. 
  • Post race activities such as award ceremonies and the recovery zone will not be available. Finishers will receive their prepackaged items and be asked to exit the stadium.
Where is packet pick up?
The Knapp Center on the Drake campus. Packet pickup will be open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday, April 17. Packet pick up is not available on race day. If you cannot attend contact Drake Road Races offificals. 

What time will the race start?
The Drake Road Races will not be a mass start event therefor the starting times vary by participants. Each registrant will be assigned a start time based on their event and anticipated finish time.
The first start will be at 7:00 AM for the Half Marathon followed by the 5K at 7:15 AM.
Waves of 50 runners will start every 90 seconds. 

Where is the start line?
The start line for both race will be on Forest Avenue in fron of Drake Stadium by the Bulldog Plaza.

Where is the finish line?
Inside Drake Stadium on the iconic Blue Oval!

Where can I park?
Parking is available in campus parking lots, such as Lot 1 on 25th Street. Parking is also available on residential streets in the surrounding area but avoid no parking signs. 

Will there be aid stations on the course?
There will be one aid station on the 5K course providing water and there will be four stations along the half marathon course that will also have Powerade. Aid stations will also have porta-potties.

Further details will be communicated to all registered participants for the in-person event. 


What are the Virtual Drake Road Races?
The virtual Drake Road Races give everyone the opportunity to experience one of Iowa's oldest road races! Our virtual run consists of a 5k, 10k and Half Marathon option, just like our in-person races. Run or walk your favorite distance wherever you want. We will ship the race packet right to you!

What items are included with the Virtual Drake Road Races?
All participants will receive a Drake Road Races branded apparel item specific to your desired size, a one-of-a-kind finisher's medal and a race bib.  Keep watching our newsletters and social media to be the first to see the reveal of the designs for the swag and medal! All participants will also have the opportunity to win prizes from sponsors during the event.

Where can I run/walk?
Anywhere and everywhere! This is your virtual run, and we want you to complete it wherever you want. You can run on sidewalks, trails, treadmill – make this your own run. Want to run with a stroller or your pet? Do it! We just ask that you use #MyDrakeRelays and tag @DrakeRelays so we can see your runs! Do I need to submit results to get a medal?
Your finisher medal will be included in your packet, so you can wear it with pride when you're ready! Stay tuned for more information on how to upload, check out the leaderboard, and download a finisher's certificate.

How do I track my distance and time?
For the Virtual Race, we accept finish times on the honor system, but the most accurate tracking can be done with a GPS tracking app.

Can I still earn the Bulldog Double medal?
Yes, participants who register for and complete the Drake Road Races and Grand Blue will receive an exclusive Bulldog Double medal in addition to the apparel and medal from the Drake Road Races. Event details for the 2021 Grand Blue Mile will be available at a later date.

How do I submit my results online?
1. When the race timeline opens, a link will be provided to submit your results.
2. Search and select the name you want to submit results for
3. Click 'Submit Results'
4. Login to your EnMotive account, if you are not already
5. You will be redirected to the page to submit results or upload photos
6. Save!

When can I submit my results online?
The 53rd Drake Road Races are set to begin on Saturday, April 17 and runners can submit their results to the virtual leaderboard until Sunday, April 25.

Will age group awards be given out for the virtual races?
We will not be giving out age group awards for the virtual race. But there will be opportunities to win prizes thanks to our sponsors.


When will registration open for the Drake Road Races?
Registration for the Drake Road Races will reopen on March 16 with limited in-person registrations available. All current registrants will be given the first opportunity to switch their registration to the in-person event.

Why is registration closed right now?
Registration is closed from March 8-15 to allow all current registrants the first opportunity to switch to the in-person event if they choose to.

Is there still a virtual option?
Yes, the event will take on a hybrid model with participants retaining the ability to participate virtually anywhere in the country from April 17-25.

I already registered for the virtual race, how do I change my registration to the in-person event?
Instructions on how to update your registration were sent to the email you registered with from events@enmotive.com
- Login to your EnMotive account
- Click 'My Account' in the upper right corner
- Scroll down to 'Upcoming Races'
- Click the 'Actions' drop down menu next to your race registration
- Click 'View Registration'
- Scroll down to 'Change Category' select the 'In-Person Event' for your race distance
- Continue through and answer any remaining questions until you get to the 'Check Out'
- Submit!

What is the deadline for current registrants to switch to the in-person event?
Current registrants will have from March 8-15 to login to their account and switch to the in-person event.

What if I miss the deadline to switch but was already registered?
If you do not switch to the in-person event before registration becomes available to the public on March 16, you may still switch to the in-person event if spots remain open. 

Is there a fee associated with switching from the virtual race to the in-person event?
There no fee to switch from the virtual race to the in-person event.

How will spots for the in-person event be awarded in the case that the number of current registrants exceeds the capacity of the race distance?
If the number of registrants exceeds the capacity for any race distance, a lottery system will be used with preference given to those who participated in the 2020 Virtual Drake Road Races. If a registrant is awarded a spot through the lottery, they will be notified via email with instructions and a timeline to complete their transfer to the in-person race, if they choose.

Will registration for an in-person event open to those who have not registered for the virtual event?
If capacity for any distance of a potential in-person event exceeds the number of registrants for that distance, the remaining spots will be made available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis.

Can I pick up my packet in-person if I'm participating virtually?
There is no in-person pick up for registrants who are participating virtually. Participants competing virtually will be mailed their packet.

I'm participating in the Grand Blue Mile, can I pick up that race packet at the in-person packet pick up?
No, all Grand Blue Mile packets will be mailed directly to participants. If you are a Bulldog Double participant, this packet will be mailed to you as well. 

If I register for the virtual event and decide not to participate, can I get a refund or defer to 2022?
One of the primary benefits of a virtual event, is that even in unpredictable times we can still provide a safe, high-quality racing experience to participants. Regardless of the format of the 2021 event, we're confident that our team will produce a great event that offers fantastic swag and opportunities to win prizes. As a result, we will not be offering any refunds or deferrals for the 2021 Drake Road Races.

  2020 Deferred Registrants  
I deferred my 2020 registration to 2021, do I have to reregister for the in-person or virtual event?
If you have completed the steps to defer your entry to 2021, be sure to follow the instructions to switch your registration to in-person event if you choose. 

I deferred my 2020 registration to 2021, can I be refunded now?
By deferring your 2020 registration, we have reserved all swag items for you for the event in 2021. As a result, we will not be offering any refunds. You will receive the 2021 race packet in the mail and all other benefits of the virtual race experience. As a 2020 deferred registrant you will be among the first to receive notifications and updates if registration for a 2021 in-person event becomes available.
